ESSENTIAL OIL - the oily liquid obtained from the plants through a variety of processes. The essential oil usually has the taste and the smell of the original plant. Essential oils are called volatile because most of them are easily vaporized. A large number of oils have antiseptic, germicidal and preservative action; however they are used primarily for fragrances and flavorings. A teaspoon may cause illness in an adult and less than on ounce may kill, if eaten.
EXTRACT- the solution that results from passing alcohol or an alcohol- water mixture through substance. Extracts are not as strong as essential oils.
EMOLLIENT- a fatty substance with lubricating action that make the skin feel softer and more pliable. Emollients also have hydrating effect by reducing moisture evaporation from the skin surface.
EMULSIFIER- holds the oil-based and water based ingredients together, helping stabilize the interaction between both phases, and thereby avoiding their separation in the cosmetic formulation.
ESSENTIAL FATTY ACID- EFA. It forms the basic building blocks of body fats and cellular membranes. If the skin's EFA content declines, so will its elasticity. Meanwhile, transepidermal water loss will increase, together with skin roughness and scaliness. Since cell membranes are largely made of phospholipids, topically applied EFAs may be metabolized in the skin, normalizing the cell lipid layer and improving the water-retention capability of the corneum layer.
EPIDERMIS- four to five layers of cells covering the skin (dermis).
EUROPEAN BLUEBERRY- otherwise known as European Bilberry. It is a rich source of antioxidants. Also strengthens blood vessels, and prevents its fragility.
